Internships

internships at camp sagamore

A Summer or Fall Internship at a National Historic Landmark can provide upper division college students and graduate students with valuable historic interpretation experience as a public tour guide.  Gain practical knowledge in outdoor education by working with our grands-program staff, use your management degree in our bookstore or your hospitality degree in our inn-keeping office.

You may be a good match for Sagamore if you enjoy living in a close community and are willing to wear many hats.  Expect to work part-time in your field & part-time in community service in exchange for room, board, & stipend.

Historic Interpreters can expect a seminar on Wednesday evenings to discuss current Adirondack Park issues (Please scroll down to view Internship descriptions for Historic Interpreters).

Outdoor program interns work under a certified outdoor educator and learn best teaching practices for a wide range of ages.

Management and hospitality interns work closely with administrators who help them deal with the public and issues of public relations.

Interns have single occupancy housing and receive all meals when working. There is also a $150/week stipend.  It is not necessary to have a car.

January, 2012

HISTORIC INTERPRETERS (2) lead acclaimed public tours of two building complexes and picturesque wilderness setting of a National Historic Landmark, an architectural prototype of National Park Service rustic design, to pursue an environmental mission in New York's Adirondack Park.

TOUR SUPERVISOR manages visitor reception and public tours, and assists with mentoring interpreters and conducting seminars.

REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be at least upper-division undergraduates with solid grounding in American cultural or environmental history, Historic Preservation/Architecture, Museum education, or other relevant field. Supervisor must be a college graduate with public interpretation or teaching experience. Successful applicants will show, between the cvr letter and resume, a stake in helping a non-profit organization pursue its socio-ecological mission; personal interests suited to a wilderness setting; and a willingness to assist staff with operational tasks 15 hrs/week.

Sagamore Institute is the non-profit steward of "Great Camp" Sagamore, a 27-building, former Vanderbilt family retreat in the center of the largest protected landscape in the lower 48 states. At a wilderness retreat for Gilded Age plutocrats, architectural, socio-economic, and environmental history are interpreted in light of current issues of sustainability.  Between daily tours and residential programs, annual visitation is 7,000 to 9,000.

Internships require minimum residency of June 10 - September 3, with preference given candidates who can remain through mid-October.

BENEFITS include a stipend paid bi-weekly ($150/week for interpreters; $200 for supervisor), private room, good food, professional training and seminars in historiography; support for career/graduate school pursuits; and opportunities to participate in educational programs.

Acceptances begin March 1 until positions filled.

TO APPLY: send cover letter specifying residency and explaining qualifications; resume; and titles/phones of three references to Dr. Michael Wilson, Sagamore Associate Director (doc's in MS Word format, please).
